When did the Jews discontinue animal sacrifice, and why?

Dear Wondering,
According to my sources, the Torah decreed that animal sacrifices could only take place in certainly holy places. Once King Solomon erected the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, it was determined that the Holy Temple was the only place that animal sacrifices could take place.
Thus when the Holy Temple was permanently destroyed in 70 CE (the Common Era), the practice of animal sacrifice ended.
